SOAS Research Logbooks

As reaffirmed by Research Councils UK (RCUK) in their public statement in June 2013, a doctorate is increasingly seen as more than producing a thesis within a limited time frame and possessing an academic specialism. Your motivations for embarking on a PhD study may vary, but by the end of it, you will be expected to be able to operate as an independent researcher in various professional contexts and achieve broader social impacts. In order to better prepare you for the current competitive economy and other challenges ahead of you, SOAS is committed to providing you with relevant training and support throughout the postgraduate research programme.

Against this backdrop, we are pleased to announce that the SOAS Research Logbook has been reinvigorated and will be re-launched in October 2013. For those who are new to it, the logbook is an online tool designed to support you in your academic and professional development and to help you build a broad and balanced skills profile. It also enables your supervisor(s) to follow your progress and advise you accordingly. The improved logbook will now encompass not only the records of research progress (as in the current use) but also regular assessments of training needs and ongoing reflections on career development. We are confident that you will find it to be a valuable tool and will ensure that there is as much pedagogical and technical support for your use as possible alongside.

Logbooks for new students will be created by the end of October.

Logbook support can be found on BLE here. You will need to log in using your SOAS ID and password.
