Green Week

Go Green Week - 7 - 14 February 2011

Green Week is a week of activities initiated by People and Planet to raise environmental awareness within Universities and Colleges.

The week consists of themed days:

Meat-Free Monday

It is estimated that halving your consumption of meat and dairy could shave 10% off your carbon footprint

Travel-light Tuesday

Transport accounts for up to 40% of a university’s emissions

Waste-not Wednesday

About a third of UK universities are still recycling less than 25% of their waste. Find out how your college is doing

Switch it off Thursday

Home electricity consumption accounts for roughly 1 tonne of carbon per person so imagine the impact we have at universities collectively

Friday

National Day of Action

The Bloomsbury Colleges are planning a series of small events during the week to promote the agenda. There will be Dr. Bike basic bike maintenance and security; Local cycle stores encouraging sustainable transport; Sustainable Fish Cities food tasting; screenings of environmental films.

On Thursday, 10th February, there will be a one day cycle maintenance workshop to teach you the basics of looking after your bike. Details are available on the website: http://www.bloomsbury.ac.uk/GreenThing and you must sign up in advance if you wish to attend.

The SOAS student Green Team has been particularly active in arranging a host of activities, including: recycled art workshops; sustainability themed photo competition and a sustainability themed pub quiz to give just a few examples.

The Environmental Manager will be on site in the main SOAS building on Wednesday 9 February, to provide information, answer questions, and encourage people to get involved. There will also be a travel survey to complete on the day or by email.

If you are interested in the environment, or want to know more, come and see us during the week and we will be happy to provide more information. Or perhaps there is something you think the college should be doing, or something it shouldn’t. Come and tell us.

Or contact Robert Courtney (Communications & Coordination) in Estates & Facilities rc45@soas.ac.uk / 020 7898 4804.
