Tribal Transitions: New Research in the Eastern Himalayas

Date: 24 October 2008Time: 10:30 AM

Finishes: 24 October 2008Time: 4:00 PM

Venue: Russell Square: College BuildingsRoom: 116

Type of Event: Seminar

This seminar is the culmination of a five-year research project (based at SOAS and funded by ESRC) that studied tribal cultures in Arunachal Pradesh, northeast India. Four speakers will present new research on various aspects of this little-known corner of the Himalayas. This is a unique opportunity to learn about populations who live within India but whose cultures, languages and religions are similar to those in Tibet and upland Southeast Asia. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate in the discussion sessions.

The project has also led to an exhibition at the British Museum entitled ‘Between Tibet and India: Cultural Diversity in the eastern Himalayas,’ which runs from 23 October 2008 to 13 April 2009 in Room 91. Admission is free

The first book produced by the research (Through the Eye of Time: Photographs of Arunachal Pradesh, 1859-2006, Brill, 2008) is on sale at the SOAS bookshop.
