This film, based on a true story, tells the tale of Denias, a youg boy from West Papua. Denias, from a small village in the highlands, struggles to get a place in school and a decent education.
The film is notable for its taking West Papua as its setting, and also for its engagement with issues of discrimination within Indonesia. Denias was filmed on location in Papua; highland scenes were shot around Wamena, and other scenes were shot in and around Kuala Kencana, perhaps the most modern town in West Papua, and which is managed by PT Freeport. This film was put forward by Indonesia for consideration for Best Foreign Film in the 2008 Oscars.
