Options for BA & BSc Continuing Students
Please find below the options open to you if you have been informed that you:
1 - May progress to the next year of your programme, but have failed a non-core course
You may choose to be re-assessed in your failed course(s). Please note: by the end of your studies at SOAS you must have passed courses to the value of at least 11 course units to be eligible for an Honours degree over 3 years (at least 14 units in a four year degree). If you pass only 10 or 10.5 units (13 or 13.5 units in a four year degree) you will be offered a Pass degree instead.
You may re-enter for assessment, if eligible, in the 2012/13 academic year without re-attending the course.
If you are unsure what re-entry options are open to you, please consult the Re-entry Regulations. Marks for re-assessments are subject to capping at 40% unless the Exam Board deemed non-submission of course work or absence from an examination was with good cause.
Exams will be held in May 2013 (the exam period will run from 2nd to 30th May) and the deadline for course work re-submission will be Friday 22nd March 2013.
If you wish to enter for re-assessment during 2012/13, you must confirm this by email to exams@soas.ac.uk no later than 30th September 2012, detailing the course(s) and assessment(s) for which you wish to re-enter.
Please note that if you have already passed a course, you cannot be re-assessed in any element to improve your overall mark unless you have been granted 'NRGC' for any element, in which case you may re-enter for assessment for that element(s) only.
2 - May not progress to the next year of your programme
Under the BA/BSc regulations, students may proceed to the next year of their degree only if they pass all core courses and pass courses to the value of at least three course units in total. If you may not proceed, some of the following options may be open to you.
Option 1 - Re-enter for assessment in 2012/13
If you are not eligible to progress to the next year of your degree and wish to re-enter for assessment in 2012/13, you may apply to take a 'Leave of Absence' from your degree in 2012/13 i.e. take a year out from full-time study. You will not be permitted to attend lectures or other classes during this period.
Exams will be held in May 2013 (the exam period will run from 2nd to 30th May) and the deadline for course work re-submission will be Friday 22nd March 2013.
Marks will be carried forward from 2011/12 if you do not re-enter for an assessment or are not eligible to do so. Course overall marks following resit/assessments are subject to capping at 40% except where the Exam Board has approved good cause.
If you wish to enter for re-assessment during 2012/13 and take leave of absence, you must confirm this by email to exams@soas.ac.uk no later than 30th September 2012, detailing the course(s) and assessment(s) for which you wish to re-enter. Please also complete an Application form - Leave of Absence and return it your Faculty Office.
Option 2 Repeat year of study (Full-time)
You may apply to return in September 2012 to repeat the year of study of your current degree and re-enter all assessments for failed courses. Permission to repeat the year of study is not granted automatically and some courses are not taught every year. If you are successful in the assessments in 2012/13, you may proceed to the next year of study in September 2013. This option is suitable only for candidates who have failed the majority of courses in 2011/12.
Marks for repeated courses will count towards your degree in full (i.e. with no capping of marks).
You may choose this option only if you have the right of examination re-entry left. Re-attending a course does not give you rights of examination re-entry over and above to which you are entitled by virtue of your degree registration. Please note that you must complete your degree within the relevant time limit for completion - see Regulation 12.6 of the
SOAS Undergraduate Handbook (pdf; 6mb)
, page 97.
If you wish to apply to repeat the year of study, please complete a Application Form - Repeat Year of Study. Before completing the form, please read the notes on the form carefully.
Option 3 Repeat year of study (Part-time)
You may apply for enrolment as a part-time intermitting student to follow failed courses only. This option should be considered only if you have failed one or two courses. Permission to enrol as a part-time student is not granted automatically.
Marks for repeated courses will count towards your degree in full (i.e. with no capping of marks).
You may choose this option only if you have the right of examination re-entry left. Re-attending a course does not give you rights of examination re-entry over and above to which you are entitled by virtue of your degree registration. Please note that you must complete your degree within the relevant time limit for completion - see Regulation 12.6 of the
SOAS Undergraduate Handbook (pdf; 6mb)
, page 97.
If you wish to apply to enrol as a part-time student, please complete an Application Form - Repeat Course (part-time). Before completing the form, please read the notes on the form carefully.
Option 4 Transfer to another degree at SOAS
You may apply to another degree at SOAS. However, the opportunity to transfer is limited and you should not assume that your application will necessarily be granted. The system of core courses which must be passed in certain years of degrees may mean that your application, if granted, entails an extension of your course of study. You must complete your degree within the relevant time limit for completion (see Regulation 12.6 of the
SOAS Undergraduate Handbook (pdf; 6mb)
page 97).
If you are a Home or EU student and are considering transferring to Year 1 to commence a new degree, please contact the Fees Office at fees@soas.ac.uk, to discuss any implication the new funding system for 2012/13 may have on your decision.
If you wish to apply to transfer degree, please complete a Application Form - Degree Transfer and return it to your Faculty Office as soon as possible. If approved, you will receive confirmation from the Registry via email to your SOAS account. Please note that your transfer is not officially approved until your receive this email.
Option 5 Withdrawal
You may withdraw permanently from the School. To do so, complete a Withdrawal Form.

Courses examined at institutions outside the School are subject to the examination entry and re-entry arrangements in force at the institution concerned.
2. Right of re-entry to failed assessment
Students have the right under the Degree Regulations for BA and BSc students of the School of Oriental and African Studies to re-enter for failed assessments on failed courses only. Re-entry is normally permitted on the next two assessment occasions . To re-enter for assessment, Students must inform the Exams Office of their intentions by the published deadline above. The right to re-enter failed assessments does not confer the right to re-attend classes or receive tuition.
3. Failure to act
If you do not inform the Examinations Office of your intentions by 30th September 2012, the School will regard your registration as having lapsed. You will still retain the right to re-enter for failed assessments where applicable - see above.
