Options for LLB Students unable to progress to the next year of their degree

A breakdown of your marks for 2011/12 is available through the Online Students Services (studentsonline.soas.ac.uk/WebSite/OnlineServices).

Updates following Late Summer re-entry will show by 5.00pm on Wednesday 12th September.

Under the LLB regulations, students may proceed to the next year of their degree only if they pass all four subjects in the examination.

If you submitted mitigating circumstances and these have been accepted by the Exam Board, this will show as 'NRGC' (No result with good cause) on your breakdown of results on Online Student Services.

If you have not been successful in any or all four courses, you will receive an e-mail explaining your current progression status and the recommendation made about what you need to do to rectify this situation by 5.00pm on Wednesday 12th September 2012. If you wish to accept the recommendation, please confirm this to exams@soas.ac.uk

You may wish to discuss your current status with members of academic staff, but please inform the Examinations and Assessments Office of your intentions by 30th September 2012.

The LLB regulations permit a number of scenarios regarding re-entry for exams.

Option 1 Take a Leave of Absence and re-enter for examinations in May 2013

You may apply for leave of absence, returning in May 2013 to retake your failed examinations. The exam period will run between 2nd and 30th May 2013.
If you are successful in the examinations in May 2013, you may proceed to the next year of your degree in September 2013.

If you take a leave of absence you will not be permitted to attend lectures or other classes during 2012/13. Please contact the membership enquiries section of the library for information about access arrangements there.

If you wish to apply for leave of absence in 2012/13, you must complete an Application Form - Leave of Absence.

Option 2 Repeat year of study (full-time) and re-enter all assessments

You may wish to apply to return in September 2012 to repeat the year of study of your current degree full-time. However, permission to repeat the year is not normally granted within the School of Law and you must consult the Undergraduate Programme Convenor, Alex Fischer, before making any formal application.  Please read the notes on the form carefully before submitting an Application Form - Repeat year of study.

Option 3 Repeat study and examinations (part-time)

If you have failed one or two courses, you may wish to apply to enrol on a part-time basis to re-attend those courses in 2012/13. However, permission to repeat the year part-time is not normally granted within the School of Law and you must consult the Undergraduate Programme Convenor, Alex Fischer, before making any formal application. Please read the notes on the form carefully before submitting an Application Form - Repeat Course

Please note that if you wish to re-attend 3 or 4 courses you should apply for Option 2 above but, for instance, if you have failed two courses and have the option to re-enter for examinations for all four courses in Late Summer 2012 or in May 2013, you may choose to re-attend these two courses in 2012/13, and re-enter for the examinations for all four courses in May 2013.

Option 4 Transfer to another degree at SOAS

You may apply to transfer to another degree at SOAS. However, the opportunity to transfer is limited and you should not assume that your application will necessarily be granted. The system of core courses which must be passed in certain years of degrees may mean that your application, if granted, entails an extension of your course of study. You must complete your degree within the relevant time limit for completion.

If you are a Home or EU student and are considering transferring to Year 1 to commence a new degree, please contact the Fees Office at fees@soas.ac.uk, to discuss any implication the new funding system for 2012/13 may have on your decision.

If you wish to apply to transfer degrees, please complete a Application Form - Degree Transfer on the right hand side of this page and return it to your Faculty Office as soon as possible. If approved, you will receive confirmation from the Registry via e-mail to your SOAS account. Please note that your transfer is not officially approved until your receive this e-mail.

Option 5  Withdrawal

You may withdraw permanently from the School. To do so, complete a Withdrawal Form.

Important Notes:

1. Intercollegiate courses

Courses examined at institutions outside the School are subject to the examination entry and re-entry arrangements in force at the institution concerned.

2. Right of re-entry to failed assessment

Students have the right under the LLB Degree Regulations to re-enter for failed examinations on the next two assessment occasions. To re-enter for examination, a student must inform the Exams Office of their intentions by the published deadline above. The right to re-enter failed examinations  does not confer the right to re-attend classes or receive tuition, nor does success in the re-entered examinations guarantee re-admission to the School.

3. Failure to act

If you do not inform the Examinations Office of your intentions by 30th September 2012, the School will regard your registration as having lapsed. You will still retain the right to re-enter for failed assessments where applicable - see above.
