Postgraduate re-entry options

If you have failed one or more of your courses, please find below the options that might be open to you. Masters degree students have the right of one re-entry to failed elements in each failed course, to be taken at the next available occasion.

If one of your courses is reported as NC-Not Completed, it is considered a Fail and the re-entry options below apply.

  1. If you have failed one or more of your courses because of failed examination(s).
  2. If you have failed one or more of your courses because of course work non-submission.
  3. If you have failed one or more of your courses because of failed course work.
  4. If you have failed your dissertation.
  5. If you have an approved deferral for some or all of your assessments

Please note that the overall mark for any course you have re-entered for will be capped at 50%, unless your absence from an examination and/ or non-submission of course work was deemed to be with good cause by the relevant Sub-Board of Examiners.

If you wish to query one of your element marks (i.e. an essay or exam mark), please contact your Faculty Office and ask for a clerical check. This means that they will check that your element mark has been correctly recorded. Please note that this process may take up to 3 weeks.
If you wish to query deductions made to course work marks, please provide your Faculty Office with copy of your receipt and/ or copy of any evidence submitted with your late submission form.

If you wish to make a representation in respect of any result (i.e. make an appeal), please see Making an appeal for information on procedures and deadlines. Please note that appeals questioning the academic judgement of markers or asking for work to be remarked will not be considered.

1 - If you have failed one or more of your courses because of failed examination(s)

  • If you were absent from an examination and your absence was deemed to be with good cause by the relevant Sub-Board of Examiners, you will be automatically re-entered to re-take your failed examination(s) in May 2013. The exam period will run between 2nd and 30th May 2013. An email confirming your re-entry will be sent to you in early October.
If your mitigating circumstances were accepted, this will show as 'NRGC' next to the relevant examination on Online Student Services.  No re-entry fee is due and your 2012/13 result will not be capped.
  • If you have failed an examination or were absent without good cause from an examination, you may apply to re-take your failed examination(s) in May 2013 by e-mailing exams@soas.ac.uk by 30th September2012. The exam period will run between 2nd and 30th May 2013.
A re-entry fee of £40 per course unit (£20 for a half-unit) is payable to SOAS. You can pay online at https://store.soas.ac.uk. Please follow the Product Catalogue to University Services and select Re-entry Fees.
It may be possible for you to sit exams overseas. This will be organised through the University of London (UoL) who will charge an additional administration fee. The UoL deadline to apply is 1st  February 2013. First, you should check to see if there is a UoL exam centre in your area and then contact samuel.okoroafor@london.ac.uk.
  • You may apply to re-attend any failed course(s) in 2012/13 by completing an application form to re-attend a failed course. Please note that applications to repeat courses are considered on an individual basis and are not automatically granted. If you do repeat the course, the overall mark for that course will not be capped.

2 - If you have failed one or more of your courses because of course work non-submission.

Please note that if a course is assessed by one piece of course work worth 100%, non-submission is treated as 0% Fail and re-submission is permitted. Please see paragraph 3 below for courses failed because of failed course work.

For other courses:

  • If your non-submission was deemed to be with good cause by the relevant Sub-Board of Examiners , you will have been automatically re-entered to submit your essay by the last day of Term 2 in 2012/13 (i.e. 22nd March 2013). Please contact your Faculty Office for more information about submission procedures. The overall mark you achieve further to your re-entry will not be capped. An email confirming your re-entry will be sent to you in early October.
  • If your non-submission was not deemed to be with good cause, you may not submit at a later date. If you commenced your programme of study in September 2010, you are required to undertake all elements of assessment and examination prescribed for that course. Therefore, if you did not submit a piece of course work, and have not been granted good cause, you cannot be awarded a pass mark for the course in question. You may apply to re-attend any failed course(s) in 2012/13 by completing an application form to re-attend a failed course. Please note that applications to repeat courses are considered on an individual basis and are not automatically granted. If you do repeat the course, the overall mark for that course will not be capped.

3 - If you have failed one or more of your courses because of failed course work.
