Re-entry Regulations

If you are ineligible for award because you have failed one or more of your courses,  you will be automatically re-entered to sit any failed examination and re-submit any failed coursework (provided it is repeatable), at the next available occasion.
For examinations, this is the School Summer examination period in May/ June 2017 (provisionally scheduled to run from 10 May to 6 June 2017) and for coursework, it is the last day of Term 2 in 2016/17 (i.e. 24 March 2017).

Undergraduate students who have failed a course overall, may enter to be re-assessed for that course on no more than two occasions. The opportunity to resit is subject to a student remaining within their time limit for completion of the degree, unless there are accepted mitigating circumstances.

The overall mark for any course you have re-entered for will be capped at 40%, unless your absence from an examination and/ or non-submission of course work was deemed to be with good cause, i.e. you submitted evidence of mitigating circumstances to the relevant Faculty Office and you have been informed that this was accepted.

Please see below further information on:

Coursework:

"Students who are resitting failed coursework must complete new coursework for the module and must not re-use assignments which have been submitted previously for that or any other module. Re-using work in this way is known as self-plagiarism and is a breach of the School’s Academic Misconduct Policy. The exception to this will be for Independent Study Projects and postgraduate dissertations which can be revised for resubmission."
(Reg. 11.12.5, http://www.soas.ac.uk/registry/degreeregulations/file105434.pdf)

You will need to contact your Faculty Office for any further information on essay titles and submission procedures.

Mitigation and capping

If you failed an assessment and your failure/ absence/ non-submission was deemed to be without good cause (i.e. you did not provide any evidence of mitigation or any provided evidence was rejected), your overall result for that course will be capped following re-entry.

If your failure/ absence/ non-submission was deemed to be with good cause (i.e. submitted mitigating circumstances evidence was accepted), this will show as 'NRGC' next to the relevant assessment on Online Student Services.
Your overall result following re-entry will not be capped.

Re-entry Fee

A re-entry fee of £40 per course unit (£20 for a half-unit) is payable to SOAS. You can pay online at SOAS Online Store. Please follow the Product Catalogue to University Services and select Re-entry Fees.
No fee is applied to any re-entry due to accepted mitigation.

Sitting examinations abroad

It may be possible for you to sit exams overseas. This will be organised through the University of London (UoL) who will charge an additional administration fee. The UoL deadline to apply is 1st  February 201. First, you should check to see if there is a UoL exam centre in your area  and then contact pgug.exams@london.ac.uk

Repeat Study Application

You may not repeat any course that you have already passed and you must follow any courses that are core and/ or compulsory for your programme.

"If the application to repeat the year is accepted due to mitigating circumstances then the marks for modules taken in the repeat year will not be capped at the minimum pass mark"
(Reg. 4.10.4, http://www.soas.ac.uk/registry/degreeregulations/file105434.pdf)

  • If repeating on a full-time basis, you may repeat the courses you took in 2015/16 (subject to availability), take new courses or a mixture of the two. Normal tuition fees will apply if you choose to apply to re-take courses.
Please note that you may choose this option only if you have a right of assessment re-entry left. Re-attending a course does not give you rights of re-entry over and above those which you are entitled to by virtue of your degree registration.
  • If repeating on a part-time basis, you must repeat courses you failed in 2015/16, (subject to availability).
Please note that you may choose this option only if you have a right of assessment re-entry left. Re-attending a course does not give you rights of re-entry over and above those which you are entitled to by virtue of your degree registration.

If you wish to apply to repeat courses(s) in 2016/17, please complete the appropriate form on the right hand side and attach it to an enquiry through SID by 31 August 2016. Please read carefully the explanatory notes before submitting the form for consideration.
