Asia House presents
PIONEERING PHOTOGRAPHERS 1850-1900
in association with The British Library & SOAS
The Exhibition Content:
Architecture and Ethnography
In the second half of the 19th century, official sponsorship allied to amateur enthusiasm led to a widespread documentation of the Indian scene. This recording passion focused primarily on architecture and ethnography as topics of particular interest. The photographs in this section demonstrate the way in which photography was used both as a tool and as a means of artistic expression in the recording of the monuments and architecture of India, and tribes and castes of the country.
