About this event

Colette Harris, Department of Development Studies, SOAS University of London

Gender equality, gender power relations, and the like have become part of the standard vocabulary of gender analysts. However, while gender norms are mentioned, and various aspects of them talked about, it is rare to find them systematically used in analysing gendered behaviour and/or studying their implications for people’s lived experiences. In this seminar I will draw on sets of gender norms collected over nearly two decades in all three continents of the global south, Europe and the United States to consider what we can learn from studying these and their effects on both men’s and women’s lives.
