Governance and Leadership in Africa

Description

The Governance and Leadership in Africa programme at SOAS, University of London (the School of Oriental and African Studies) provides a unique opportunity for participants to discuss and develop their knowledge of topical issues affecting the African continent. The programme will bring together public sector officials, civil servants and managers from African institutions, as well as participants from other countries working on Africa, to discuss issues of leadership and governance.

The course focuses on the many and diverse contemporary domestic challenges to African states. African politics need to be considered in the context of global issues and some sessions explore these linkages. Because of the large number and diversity of African states, the course is structured thematically but workshop discussions allow students to follow up regions and countries of particular interest.

Sessions will be held at the SOAS main campus in Bloomsbury, central London, and will draw from the unrivalled expertise at SOAS as well as renowned academics from other institutions, providing three sessions each day followed by a practical, interactive workshop.

Themes have been selected to familiarise participants with the key issues in current debates on governance and leadership in Africa. The programme will explore state-society relations, governance and development linkages, conflict, corruption, new social forces, democratisation and the rule of law are considered. As these processes intertwine with outside forces, whether longstanding or recently (re-)emerged, these intersections are also explored.
