I would like to make a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act regarding your IT network infrastructure.
Please could you answer the following questions regarding the equipment for School of Oriental & African Studies at Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London, WC1H 0XG.
1.) How many desktop PCs do you have at this site? Which brand(s) are they?
2.) How many laptops/notebooks or tablet PCs do you have at this site? Which brand(s) are they?
3.) How many thin clients do you have at this site? Which brand(s) are they?
4.) What operating systems do you run on your PCs/Laptops?
5.) How many desktops, laptops and thin clients do you have in total in your organisation across the country?
6.) How many physical servers do you have on site? Which brand(s) are they?

10.) What supplier provides the maintenance (out of warranty) support on your desktops and servers and when does the contract expire?

1.) We use Dell branded desktop PCs we have approximately 1,550 onsite. We have 91 Apple Desktops.
2.) We have 171 official laptops. We encourage bring-your-own-device and staff can buy their own through a scheme. There are also laptops purchased as part of research grants: these are not included in the numbers above and are not centrally managed. Of the 171 managed laptops, the majority are Dell though there are some Toshiba and 30 are Apple.
3.) SOAS does not use thin client hardware, though we use Windows Terminal services to deliver a remote desktop to any user who wishes to use it. We can support around 200 concurrent thin client connections.
4.) We use XP for the majority of desktops and Windows 7 for all laptops. All PC desktops will be Windows 7 by 1 October 2013. We also have limited quantities of Macs - comprising about 6% of our estate.

6.) We currently have 71 Dell servers in current use.
7.) We have 121 virtual servers running on 9 physical hosts.
8.) EMC VMWare 5.
9.) Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 and SUSE Linux all 64 bit.
10.) All servers and desktops are bought with a 5 year warranty. Desktops are replaced every summer and the warranty typically expires in August /September. We replace 20% of our estate on an annual basis. Servers are purchased as they are needed.

12.) SOAS does not use full ERP – we use Unit4 Agresso that has some ERP functions.
13.) SOAS does not use Groupware.

25.) There is no outsourced managed contract, though some of our equipment is in a co-location site at the University of London Computer Centre - this is on a rolling contract.
26.) SOAS operates this internally, there is no outsourcing or managed service.
