Reference: FOI2013/024

Request

1) Please can you tell me how many applications your university received for full-time undergraduate degrees for entry in 2013/14 by the end of Jan 15th, 2013.

2) Can you also please tell me the number of applications for full-time undergraduate degrees for entry to the previous academic year, specifically 2012/13, that were received by the end of Jan 15, 2012.

Response

1) This information is held by SOAS but is being withheld under the exemption at section 22(1)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act. Statistics on undergraduate applications to January 15th will be published by UCAS in Autumn this year. This exemption is subject to a public interest test. It is recognised that there is a general public interest in the transparency and accountability of public authorities such as SOAS. However, there is also a public interest in SOAS having the opportunity to analyse statistics ahead of publication.

UCAS will be publishing the statistics for every higher education institution later in the year (November), at which point SOAS’s applications can be considered in their wider context. SOAS is of the view that publication of these statistics in November should satisfy the public interest in transparency.

Overall, SOAS takes the view that the public interest in withholding this information for a few months outweighs the public interest in immediate disclosure.

2) 3652.

Figures for applications to higher education institutions for the years from 2004/05 to 2012/13 can be seen on the UCAS website at:
