Ethnicity of Politics and Economics undergraduates

Disclosure date: 11 April 2014

Reference: FOI2014/055

Request

I have seen that you offer the following courses at your university and would appreciate your help in assisting me with my query, by providing me with the ethnicity breakdown of the students studying at your University and if possible, those studying courses in the following areas:

  • Politics
  • Economics

Response

Please see the attached spreadsheet. Data is for undergraduate degree students and taken from the 1 December 2013 snapshot which is used for statutory funding and internal/external monitoring.  Politics/Economics undergraduates are defined as those studying for single, or joint subject undergraduate Politics/Economics degrees.  The group Economics students also includes those who are studying for a degree in Development Economics. In accordance with standard rounding policy where an ethnicity group constitutes less than 5% of the population, it is reported as “less than 5%” rather than the specific figure.

Under the FOI Act, personal data (information that identifies or is about an individual) is exempt from disclosure under section 40(2) where disclosure would be a breach of one or more of the data protection principles. In this case, it would be both unfair and unlawful to disclose ethnicity data which could be linked to specific individuals due to the small size of the group.
