I would like a race/gender/ breakdown of fractional staff on permanent contracts by faculty and department if possible.
As at 14 May 2014, SOAS, University of London (the School) employed a total of 112 fractional staff on permanent contracts.
In disclosing data on the gender and race breakdown, SOAS has to have regard to the risk of identifying individuals, as race/ethnicity is sensitive personal data under the Data Protection Act 1998. Therefore, figures have been provided by faculty only (departmental group sizes are too small meaning individuals would be easily identifiable) and specific figures are only disclosed where they are above five. Please note that some members of staff have refused to disclose their ethnicity.
The unadjusted data is exempt under section 40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act as to release it could allow the race/ethnicity of identifiable individuals to be disclosed. There is no lawful justification for making this information public and to do so would be unfair to the individuals concerned, thereby contravening the first data protection principle.
