Centre of Islamic Studies

Conferences

In October 1997, the Centre hosted a symposium on Criminal Judicial Procedures in Shari'a, attracting speakers from all over the world. The symposium was opened by Lord Geoffrey Howe, and papers presented covered the entire judicial process. Discussion centred on many previously ignored aspects of Islamic criminal law. Proceedings were published in 2003 as an edited volume, Criminal Justice in Islam.

A three-day conference on 'Hadith: Text and History', held in March 1998, brought together an international gathering scholars from all areas of hadith studies. Over 200 delegates attended the conference and papers presented ranged from the more traditional discussion of methodologies of hadith authentication and criticism, to the application of modern literary theory to the language of the hadith, and the role of hadith in shaping modern legislation.

'Conference on the Qur'an', SOAS Qur'an Conference Series

1999 saw the Centre's first biennial 'Conference on the Qur'an'. This conference series seeks to provide a forum for investigating the ways in which we read, understand, interpret, translate, debate and represent the Qur'anic text, and to discuss the basic question: how is the Qur'anic text to be read, translated and interpreted? Papers are presented in both English and Arabic, and selected proceedings are later published in the Centre's

Journal of Qur'anic Studies Journal of Qur'anic Studies Journal of Qur'anic Studies .

The 2013 Qur'an conference will be held on 7-9 November. A call for papers can be accessed via the left-hand navigational tab.
