This seminar traces aspects of the emergence and development of two Jewish and Muslim community representative organisations in the UK, namely the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Muslim Council of Britain. It compares and contrasts key factors motivating their development and influencing their direction, and considers some of the current challenges that they face.
Khadijah Elshayyal has recently completed her PhD entitled ‘The development of Muslim identity politics in the UK, 1960-2010 – development, challenges and the future, as illustrated by the fate of freedom of expression’. She is currently involved in the Everyday Muslim oral history and archive project.
