Microsoft Windows - Connectivity and Printing
Prerequisites
Your workstation needs its operating system to be sufficiently up-to-date to the following requirements (Service Packs are available from the Microsoft Service Pack center at http://support.microsoft.com/sp):
- Windows 8: There are no required patches, however these instructions will not work with Windows 8 RT (used on some tablets, e.g. Microsoft Surface).
- Windows 7: although not necessary, it is recommended you install Service Pack 1, and that the "Starter" edition of Windows 7 (sold with some netbooks) is incapable of connecting to eduroam and you will need to upgrade to one of the other editions.
- Windows Vista: you must have installed at least Service Pack 2 (requires Service Park 1 to be installed first)
- Windows XP: you must have installed at least Service Pack 3
The instructions you need are identical for all versions of Microsoft Windows.
- download the SOAS Primer for Microsoft Windows (exe; 1054kb) and save it to your desktop
- now run the SOAS Primer application you just downloaded
- the tool will check to see if your computer has everything needed in place, if not you will be informed what is missing (typically Service Packs)
- a windows titled "SOAS Laptop Primer" will open with SU1X, eduroam and JANET Roaming logos at the top
- amend the username box to match your SOAS username (in the form ”123456@soas.ac.uk”) and enter in your password
- click on 'Start Setup'
- after a short time, you should connect to the network and find that your laptop configured for both wired and wireless access
Recommendations
Windows Vista, 7 & 8
A good idea is to configure your computer to not remember your SOAS credentials across reboots and to enter in your username and password when prompted to connect to eduroam. To do this:
- click on the networking connections icon in the bottom right
- in the menu that opens, select 'Open Network and Sharing Center'
- on the left hand side, click on 'Manage wireless networks'
- repeat the following steps for wireless networks 'eduroam' and 'eduroam (deprecated)':
- double click on wireless network (ie. 'eduroam')
- in the windows that opens, click on the 'Security' tab
- uncheck "Remember my credentials for this connection each time I'm logged on"
- click on OK
- your workstation should now be configure to not remember your SOAS username and password
Printing
Tested under Windows 7, 8 and XP
Please Note: You will need to be connected to the Network at SOAS, either by Wired or Wireless means, to install and use the printers on your personal machine.
- Re-download (if necessary) and run the SOAS Wireless Primer (above).
- Click on the "Printing" tab.
- Click "Setup Printer" button.
- When prompted for username and password, enter your username in the form ADIR\123456 - replacing 123456 with your username, and your enter your SOAS password in the password box.
- You can now send jobs to the added "SafeCom_Student" printer (this works for all SOAS users, not just students), and collect jobs as you would printing from any regular SOAS workstation.
