Introduction to Afrikaans

A 10-week course aimed at those who are able to make headway with basic, everyday Afrikaans and who wish to further their understanding of the language and their ability to communicate in it.

Description

This SOAS Language Centre course in the less widely taught (LWT) language of Afrikaans is aimed at participants who possess basic abilities in terms of speaking and comprehension. The course focuses on a series of situational contexts in which participants will be asked to understand what is taking place around them and to respond in comprehensible and clear Afrikaans. This course will provide a solid foundation of elementary structures and grammar, allowing participants to further their knowledge of the language.

Method

The course is taught in English and Afrikaans. Class size is normally limited to fifteen to allow close involvement.

Overview and revision of basic constructions
  • More on adjectives and plural forms
  • Idiomatic expressions in Afrikaans: conversation drill
  • Social context (1): planning and booking a holiday in South Africa
  • Sentence conjunction: making speech more detailed
  • Social context (2): sharing news in Afrikaans
  • Social context (3): talking about newspapers and the media in Afrikaans
  • Introducing prepositions
  • Conversational drill and role play
  • Consolidation of new vocabulary and grammar

Continuing your study

Subject to demand, the Language Centre may be able to schedule an Introduction to Afrikaans (Part 3) later in the academic year. Reading, writing, speaking and comprehension skills will continue to be developed, allowing students to progress with confidence. Please keep an eye on the Language Centre website for further details as they become available.

Timetable

Classes will be held at the Bloomsbury or Kings Cross Campus of SOAS in central London on one evening a week or Saturday daytime. Participants receive 20 hours of language tuition over a ten-week period (with additional weeks where public holidays displace a class session). See our timetable page for full information.
