Accelerated Arabic (Modern Standard) Stage 1
A one-year course in Modern Standard Arabic for beginner and lower intermediate learners, a total of 120 hours over three terms
Mode of Attendance: Part Time
This course is aimed at completing the beginner and lower intermediate levels within three terms and is reasonably fast paced. It is designed to enable learners to communicate in Modern Standard Arabic within a range of everyday situations using the four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. It will develop communicative skills in a wide range of contexts enabling the student to effectively interact in formal situations where Modern Standard Arabic would be spoken. Modern Standard Arabic is the recognised means of formal spoken and written communication. It is used throughout the Arabic speaking world on official occasions, in education and the media.
Having completed the course students should be able to:
- Express themselves in Arabic a wide range of sentence structures and phrases;
- Understand a range of spoken Arabic beyond common courtesy and survival requirements;
- Use a greater variety of vocabulary.
Over three terms, students can expect to complete the beginners and lower intermediate levels according to the following schedule:
Term 1 = Beginners Term 1 and 2
Term 2 = Beginners Term 3 and Lower Intermediate Term 1
Term 3 = Lower Intermediate Terms 2 and 3
Classes will be held at the Bloomsbury or Kings Cross Campus of SOAS in central London on two evenings a week OR Saturday daytimes. On either course, participants receive 40 hours of language tuition over each ten-week term (with additional weeks where public holidays displace a class session).
