Description

The course aims to familiarise students with the basic structures of Classical Arabic and to help the students in the comprehension of the language of the Qur'an. Emphasis is placed on reading and writing skills.

The course aims to improve the skills acquired on the Arabic Qur'anic evening beginners course or similar courses. To develop skills in a range of contexts related to the classical Arabic and the context of Qur’an enabling the student to effectively interact in formal situations where Modern Standard Arabic and Arabic Qur'anic would be used.

Having completed the course students should be able to:

  • express themselves in Arabic a wide range of sentence structures and phrases in the Islamic contexts
  • understand a range of spoken Arabic beyond common courtesy and survival requirements
  • use a greater variety of vocabulary of MSA and Qur'anic contexts.
  • ability to read, understand and use the language of Qur’an.

The course is taught in English and Arabic and covers reading, writing, speaking and listening using contemporary printed and audio video material. There is a balance between activities, structure, practice and grammar. Class size is normally limited to fifteen to make learning as interactive as possible.

Entry to the course is by assessment only. Applicants must contact the Language Centre to arrange for an assessment at least 2 weeks before the beginning of the term.

The fee for each ten-week term is £345 payable in advance.

Timetable

Classes will be held at the Bloomsbury or Kings Cross Campus of SOAS in central London on one evening a week or Saturday daytime. Participants receive 20 hours of language tuition over each ten-week period (with additional weeks where public holidays displace a class session). See our timetable pages.
