Duration: One-year of three ten-week terms

Featured events

Mode of Attendance: Part Time

This course at SOAS Language Centre in London aims to reinforce the skills of communicating in Modern Standard Arabic acquired on the Advanced course or similar courses. Having completed the course learners should be able to:

  • initiate and sustain discussion of topics of general interest;
  • understand the main points of any non-technical text;
  • carry out basic research: identify important sources and understand main ideas;
  • understand the general ideas of lectures on familiar topics;
  • write essays and opinion pieces on a wide variety of topics.

The course is taught in English and Arabic and covers reading, speaking and listening using contemporary printed and audio material. An appropriate balance is struck between communicative activities, structure, practice and grammar. Class size is normally limited to fifteen to allow intensive practice.

Entry to the course is by assessment only. Applicants must contact the Language Centre to arrange for an assessment at least 3 weeks before the beginning of the term.

Our course materials page shows you what you need to buy for this course. Course materials are not included in the course fee and can be purchased from the SOAS bookshop bookshop@soas.ac.uk.

Classes will be held at the Bloomsbury or Kings Cross Campus of SOAS in central London on one evening a week or Saturday daytime. Participants receive 20 hours of language tuition over a ten-week period (with additional weeks where public holidays displace a class session).
