Hebrew at SOAS Language Centre
Hebrew is a Semitic language related to Arabic and to several other living languages, such as Maltese, Amharic and Tigrinya. Although Hebrew ceased to be used as a vernacular language before the common era, it continued to be cultivated as the language of Judaism and of Judaic learning and culture.
In the late 19th century and the early 20th century, Hebrew was 'revived' as a spoken language. It is now the official language of Israel, spoken by around 7 million people, and has established itself as the first language of the majority of those born in Israel.
