Introduction to Igbo

A 10-week course aimed at those who wish to understand and to make themselves understood in everyday spoken Igbo.

Description

This SOAS Language Centre course in the Less Widely Taught (LWT) language of Igbo is designed to give participants a basic conversational ability in the language. The course takes the form of a series of situation contexts in which participants will be asked to understand what is taking place around them and to respond in comprehensible and clear Igbo.

Method

The course is taught in English and Igbo. Class size is limited to fifteen to allow close involvement.

Summary of course contents (by session)
  • Pronunciation; greetings and leave-taking; constructing simple sentences
  • Receiving visitors; introducing oneself and others; vocabulary building
  • More on greetings; making requests
  • Expressing wants, needs, intentions, feelings; negation and prohibition
  • Describing people and things; describing actions; expressing negation
  • Describing the position of people and things; words and their opposites
  • The environment and the weather; giving directions and discussing topics
  • Past, present and future; asking questions; constructing short dialogues
  • Exploring elements of Igbo culture: progress test
  • Question and answer dialogues (in pairs); progress evaluation

Continuing your study

Subject to demand, the Language Centre may be able to schedule Introduction to Igbo 2 later in the academic year. Speaking and comprehension skills continue to be developed, allowing students to progress with confidence. The use of Igbo in formal contexts will also be covered.

Timetable

The course is taught in small groups with a maximum of fifteen students per group. Classes will be held at the Bloomsbury or Kings Cross Campus of SOAS in central London on one evening a week or Saturday daytime. Participants receive 20 hours of language tuition over a ten-week period (with additional weeks where public holidays displace a class session).
