Introduction to Kurdish (Kurmanji)

A 10-week course aimed at those who wish to learn to read and write in the northern dialect of Kurdish (Kurmanji) and to acquire a basic conversational ability

Description

This SOAS Language Centre course in the Less Widely Taught (LWT) language of Kurdish (Kurmanji) is designed to give participants a basic conversational ability in the language. The course takes the form of a series of situation contexts in which participants will be asked to understand what is taking place around them and to respond in comprehensible and clear Kurdish.

Method

The course is taught in English and Kurdish. Class size is normally limited to fifteen to allow close involvement.

  • Introduction to the Kurdish language and alphabet
  • Forms of greeting; introducing oneself and others
  • Basic language structures and vocabulary
  • Role-plays to consolidate pronunciation and vocabulary
  • Mid-session review: consolidation of reading, writing and grammar
  • Countries, nationalities and languages
  • Food and drink; likes and dislikes
  • Social context: common expressions of greetings and welcoming
  • Reading and writing exercises
  • Overview of vocabulary and grammar

Continuing your study

This course is designed to make you confident in your ability to pronounce Kurdish and to make yourself understood in a small number of situational contexts, giving you the confidence to continue your study of Kurdish either privately or in a small group. The course is not designed to lead to a further scheduled course later in the year. It may, however, be possible to schedule Introduction to Kurdish (Kurmanji), Part 2 - a course aimed at those who have received around 20 hours of formal tuition in the language - later in the academic year, subject to sufficient demand.

Course materials are not included in the course fee and can be purchased from the SOAS bookshop bookshop@soas.ac.uk. You are advised not to purchase the materials until your course is confirmed.

Timetable

Classes will be held at the Bloomsbury or Kings Cross Campus of SOAS in central London on one evening a week or Saturday daytime. Participants receive 20 hours of language tuition over a ten-week period (with additional weeks where public holidays displace a class session).
