A 10-week course aimed at those who already possess a conversational ability in Kurdish (Kurmanji) and who wish to learn to read and write in the language.

Description
This SOAS Language Centre course in the Kurmanji dialect of Kurdish is designed to give participants an overview of the grammar and syntax of the language. It is aimed at those who already possess the ability to speak Kurdish and wish to learn more about its formal structure. The course combines a thorough investigation of formal grammar with exercises involving reading, writing and conversation.
This course assumes existing knowledge of the language and an assessment is therefore required unless applicants have already taken Introduction to Kurdish (terms 1, 2 and 3) with us before. See "How to Apply for this Course".
Method
The course is taught in English and Kurdish. Class size is normally limited to fifteen to allow close involvement.
Summary of course contents by session
- Personal pronouns; simple present tense(s) of the verb bûn ('to be/become')
- The verb hebûn ('to have', 'to exist'); talking about one’s family and work
- Prepositions, postpositions, conjunctions and questions words
- Simple present and future tenses of simple and compound verbs
- Simple past and past continuous tenses of intransitive verbs
- Revision; demonstrative adjectives and pronouns
- Verbs dan ('to give'), kirin ('to do'); causatives
- Past tenses of transitive verbs
- Auxiliary and helping verbs; past participles and the perfect tenses, the passive voice
- Consolidation, revision and end of term test
Continuing your study
Kurdish for for Post Beginners and Native Speakers is envisaged as a ‘stand-alone’ course. Subject to demand, however, the Language Centre the Language Centre may be able to offer an additional course for native speakers later in the academic year in which reading, writing, speaking and comprehension skills continue to be developed. Keep an eye on the Language Centre website for further details as they become available.

Timetable
Classes will be held at the Bloomsbury or Kings Cross Campus of SOAS in central London on one evening a week or Saturday daytime. Participants receive 20 hours of language tuition over a ten-week period (with additional weeks where public holidays displace a class session).
