Sanskrit Reading Circle 2
A one-year course in Sanskrit undertaking an in-depth, analytical study of selected literary texts and involving participation in the form of presentations and student-led discussions
Duration:
This is a one-year course with three terms of ten weeks.
Mode of Attendance: Part Time
Description
This course is intended as a post-Beginners introduction to Sanskrit literature, presupposing an ability to understand basic Sanskrit grammar and to read the devanagari script without any difficulty. Whilst Sanskrit Reading Circle 1 is strongly recommended prior to undertaking this course, it is not a prerequisite.
The course aims to broaden understanding of literary texts and further develop an ability to analyse and to critically appreciate key texts selected from various phases and genres of Sanskrit. These are studied within their historical and literary contexts.
Students will be asked to undertake translation of extracts from original Sanskrit texts and to discuss their literary merits in class. Students will also be expected to give presentations on the issues arising from the texts studied in class.
In 2011-12, the following texts have been selected for study:
Term 1: Bhaṭṭikāyam of Bhaṭṭi (Canto 10)
Term 2: Meghadūtam of Kālidāsa (Pūrvamegha)
Term 3: Māltimādhava of Bhavabhūti (Act 1)
