Sanskrit Upper Intermediate
A one-year course in Sanskrit, at SOAS Language Centre in London. This is also the third and final year of the Certificate in Sanskrit.

Description
The course aims to enhance the ability to read and understand Sanskrit text, to revise and consolidate knowledge of Sanskrit grammar and to introduce the student to Sanskrit court literature. To achieve this, a wide selection of extracts from Sanskrit literature will be studied in class, including specimens from various genres e.g. mahākāvyas, plays, prose, etc. An introduction to poetics will be an integral part of this course. Students will also be encouraged to translate and compose Sanskrit.
Method
In this course, a student is expected to have a working knowledge of Sanskrit grammar and complete familiarity with the devanāgarī script. The selected passages will be read and translated and their literary merits discussed in class. There will be regular practice in reading and recitation of Sanskrit texts each week. Class size is normally limited to fifteen to allow for personal attention to each student.
Duration
This is a one-year course with three terms, of which the first two are twelve weeks long and the final term is six week long. The culmination of this course is the Certificate in Sanskrit, the examination for which will be scheduled in May 2012.

Fees for this Course
The fee for each of the first two terms is £380; the fee for the third and final term will be £190.

This textbook is not included in the course fee and can be purchased from the SOAS bookshop bookshop@soas.ac.uk. You are advised not to purchase course materials until your course has been confirmed.
During the course of the year, in-house materials will be provided for the individual literary texts that will be studied; there will be no additional cost for these.
