Description

SOAS Language Centre is pleased to offer this new professional development Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching a South Asian Language, aimed at raising the professional profile of the teaching of South Asian languages in the UK and elsewhere.

Overview

The Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching a South Asian Language has been specifically designed to meet the rapidly growing demand for trained and qualified teachers of South Asian languages in the UK and elsewhere. It equips students with the knowledge and skills which will enable them to teach a South Asian language to a broad profile of learners in UK, European and worldwide educational contexts.

Mode

The Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching a South Asian language can only be taken on a part time basis (one year consisting of three terms), equivalent to 1.5 course units carrying 67.5 CATS credits at postgraduate level.

Structure

All students on the programme must take the following courses, each equally weighted as equivalent to 0.5 of a course unit, as follows:

(i) Language Teaching and Learning
This component focuses on universals in language teaching and the seminars are shared by teachers of the various South Asian languages.

(ii) The Sociolinguistics and Teaching Context of South Asian Languages
There are common sociolinguistic and practical issues around the teaching of South Asian languages in the UK. This component investigates these issues.

(iii) The Teaching of Bengali/Gujarati/Hindi/Panjabi/Urdu
Student-teachers synthesise what they have learned in the other components and apply this to teaching practices and activities in their chosen South Asian language.

There is, in addition to the three compulsory courses stated above, a teaching practice and classroom observation element. This is also compulsory. Precise details as to timetabling will not be available until the number of students can be established for the individual language offered.

(iv) Teaching practice and classroom observation
This is an integral part of the Certificate and introduces students to actual classroom teaching. Students will be asked to both lead and observe sessions, and to meet and comment on their experiences.
