Welcome to the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences

Throughout your studies you will mostly refer to the department web sites for handbook, programme information and relevant documentation. In addition there are a number of Faculty-wide guides and standard documentation which will be published from this page. You will be informed by e-mail as and when this documentation is linked and posted throughout the year.

Currently we have useful beginning of term documents including the Faculty Handbook and registration forms.

We advise you to read the Faculty Handbook as it has a lot of information to help you navigate around conducting your study, including regulations and submission rules.

Sign-up for courses to be studied in 2009-2010

All returning students must sign up for the courses they will follow in 2009/10.

How to register

From Monday 20 April to Friday 31 July 2009 an on-line form will be available on the internet at https://studentsonline.soas.ac.uk/WebSite/OnlineServices/ where you can sign-up your course choices. These will then be checked against the academic requirements and if any choices are invalid you will be notified by e-mail and asked to try again.

What happens next?

The Faculty Office will seek academic approval for course choices, and all choices so approved will be pre-printed on your Course and Examination Registration form which should be signed by you and handed into the Faculty Office during the registration period in the 2009/10 Autumn Term. You will not need to seek additional approval at this time, as choices will have been pre-checked by the Undergraduate / Postgraduate Tutor. It should also be noted that this course selection may, in exceptional circumstances, be revised during this time.

Who has to sign up?

All returning undergraduate students, and all returning part-time taught postgraduate students must sign up for their courses as specified above.

Year abroad students

There is no requirement for students who will be abroad in the 2009/10 academic year. Students who are currently abroad, but are expected to return to SOAS in 2009/10, are asked to sign-up for courses if this is at all possible.

The small print

Whilst SOAS cannot guarantee that all the courses offered during this sign-up period will be available in the 2009/10 session, every effort will be made to accommodate student choices, and the number of selections made to a particular course may be used to determine this availability. The information will also be used to inform the teaching timetable for 2009/10, although it may not be possible to guarantee that all student choices will be achievable due to the potential for clashes. The publication of a first draft of the timetable in April will allow students to check their own personalised timetable.

Submitting Your Work Online

In the 2008-9 academic year SOAS is trialing electronic submission of coursework, via BLE, for a limited number of courses across the three faculties and within IFCELS.

On courses where online submission is an option you will now be able to submit your coursework from anywhere with an internet connection with no need to print or physically submit your essays.

From this page you can find information on the online submission process and specific instructions relating to submitting coursework to the departments of Development Studies, Politics, Economics, Law, and DeFims. While policy and regulations are harmonised across the school there are some specific points you should be aware of that relate to these specific departments.

If you have any questions about making electronic submissions that aren't answered in these pages or on the attached Submission Guide, please contact either your course tutor/convenor or your departmental faculty officer in the faculty office where you are submitting your work to.
