In April 2013, the Supreme Court of India made a landmark decision of rejecting a patent application made by the pharmaceutical giant Novartis. Would the decision transform the debates on patent and access to medicines? How did the global movement meet the social and legal activism in India?

Ms Prathibha Sivasubramanian, LLM, independent lawyer. She is a former Senior Legal Officer ofLawyers Collective HIV/AIDS Unit, New Delhi, India. For the past eight years, she has been involved in patent oppositions and litigations relating to access to medicines, including the Novartis case.
