PLAATJE, SOLOMON TSHEKISHOI

MS 375495Biographical material, papers, notes, correspondence and photographs dated 1902-1932, of Solomon Tshekishoi Plaatje (1876-1932). Born in the Orange Free State of a strong Lutheran family. Elected General Corresponding Secretary to the newly formed African National Congress, 1912. Member of the Congress Delegation to London against the Natives Land Bill; delegate to the first Government Conference held under the Native Affairs Act. Author of numerous books including Native life in South Africa, Sechuana Proverbs, and A Sechuana Reader. 1 box. Handlist.

PRATT, JOHN THOMAS SIR

PP MS 5Correspondence and papers of Sir John Thomas Pratt (1876-1970). Consular Service, China 1898-1924; Adviser to the Foreign Office on Far Eastern affairs, 1925-1938; Head of Far East Section, Ministry of Information, 1939-1941. Most of the papers date from after 1941 and concern his various publications, his campaign against British involvement in the Korean War, lecture notes and press cuttings.
