This page lists the databases available at SOAS, with titles beginning with the letters A-B; for other databases use the letter navigation on the left or go to the A-Z database homepage. 

On-campus access is automatic for most databases; and many can be accessed off-campus using your SOAS id and password (the same as you use for SOAS e-mail and computers). Off-campus access is only available to SOAS students and staff; and is available only where there is a link for 'off-campus use'.

Description

Part of EBSCOhost, Academic Search Premier offers full- text access to more than 4,500 scholarly journals (including more than 3,700 peer-reviewed titles) covering social sciences, humanities, education, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, and ethnic studies. In addition to the full-text the database also offers indexing and abstracts for all 8,300 journals in the collection.

Africa-Wide: NiPAD provides single point access to over 40 databases. Records come from books, periodical articles, pamphlets, maps and music recordings.

Databases included are:

  • IBISCUS (1970 to present) a development database on francophone Africa.
  • Knipkat from the Nasionale Afrikaanse Letterkunde Museum en Navorsingsentrum (NALN) an index of press cuttings from newspapers and magazines relating to Afrikaans.
  • The Southern African Database (Sardius) (1961-1997) database of 34,000+ annotated records.
  • NAMLIT (19th century-present) a comprehensive bibliography of Namibia-related literature.
  • International Library of African Music (ILAM) indexes recordings and publications from the early 20th century to present.
  • Index to South African Periodicals (1987-present) covers more than 440 South African periodicals.

AllAfrica.com is a news archive containing over 900,000 articles from about 130 media organizations, AllAfrica.com’s own reporting team, NGOs, governments and international institutions. About 1000 articles are posted daily.

The site is browsable by region/country and topic. The advanced search provides further options such as specifying time periods, publishers and categories.

Currently, the database includes:

  1. Reading China:   564 eBooks collected from the best modern literature works.   
  2. Yearbook: 53 titles, 553 volumes in the yearbook database. Latest issues will be uploaded into the database when published. The subjects are chiefly statistical yearbooks. Please click guide to yearbooks ( 年鉴导航) for more information.
  3. Newspaper: 10 titles. In addition to inquiry and searching service using professional classifying system and indexing methods that are suitable to newspaper resource.  The database provides such service as browsing original -newspapers online and other value-added services. Latest issues will be uploaded into the database when published.

Description

The database provides access to full-texts of English translations of Chinese laws and regulations, judicial cases, legal news and gazettes. It also allows users to search and browse the table of contents of leading law journals.
