This page lists the Chinese language databases available at SOAS; for other databases use the letter navigation on the left or go to the A-Z database homepage

On-campus access is automatic for most databases; and many can be accessed off-campus using your SOAS id and password (the same as you use for SOAS e-mail and computers). Off-campus access is only available to SOAS students and staff; and is available only where there is a link for 'off-campus use'.

Description

Currently, the database includes:

  1. Reading China:   564 eBooks collected from the best modern literature works.   
  2. Yearbook: 53 titles, 553 volumes in the yearbook database. Latest issues will be uploaded into the database when published. The subjects are chiefly statistical yearbooks. Please click guide to yearbooks ( 年鉴导航) for more information.
  3. Newspaper: 10 titles. In addition to inquiry and searching service using professional classifying system and indexing methods that are suitable to newspaper resource.  The database provides such service as browsing original -newspapers online and other value-added services. Latest issues will be uploaded into the database when published.

Reading China: Since 1950s to the turn of the century;
Yearbook: varies according to title - earliest 1970s and latest one year ago;
Newspaper: updated everyday

Description

The database provides access to full-texts of English translations of Chinese laws and regulations, judicial cases, legal news and gazettes. It also allows users to search and browse the table of contents of leading law journals.

There are also notes and hyperlinks to all the related laws, regulations, cases and law review articles. The notes and links are in Chinese language.

Full-text is available to subscribed content. A small percentage of the articles are images which can be converted to text-based articles by using the OCR button. Bibliographic citations are available free of charge for the entire CNKI database.

Description

The database, with English language interface, provides full-text access to Chinese journals, many of which include English abstracts.

Over 15 million articles from approximately 1,200 journals within the four subscribed series which are: Literature/History/Philosophy (F), Politics/Military affairs/Law (G), Education/Social Sciences (H) and Economics (J).

Date rang varies according to title (most are retrospectively covered).

The best result is gained by searching with terms in simplified Chinese.

Special requirements

All articles are available in PDF format so you will need Acrobat Reader version 5.X or higher with simplified Chinese font, or alternatively download CAJ Viewer to view or download the articles.

Please use Microsoft IE to input Chinese characters and choose a GB or Unicode encoded font.

Description

The Chinese Studies Online (CSO) is a package as well as a platform that enables searching multiple resources in one click. It focuses on a broad collection of Chinese studies materials. Among this package:

1. China Online Journals (COJ)(Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences)

Provides cover-to-cover display journals, allowing readers to browse each journal in the same manner as with print copies; covers from 1997 & update weekly.

Focuses on core journals that are highly recommended by librarians. Among them:

  • Arts/Humanities: (491 titles)
  • Law/politics: (440 titles)
  • Social Sciences: (660 titles)
  • Business/economics:(612 titles)
2. Dissertations of China (DOC)(Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences)

Holds over 850,000 records of full-text, or abstracts and other descriptive information of Masters, Doctoral, and Post-doctoral dissertations from KEY Chinese research institutions from 1986 onward.

3. Policies and Laws of China (PLOC)

Provides valuable information on Chinese jurisdiction, legislature, and business laws.

Holds 168,194 records covering a comprehensive range of full-text Chinese policies, laws and regulations of both national and regional levels from 1949 onward.

Description

NPM Online contains more than 12,000 images of Chinese painting, calligraphy, ceramics, jade, bronze, Buddhist antiquities and other artifacts from the National Palace Museum in Taipei. It provides high-resolution 1024x768 pixel images and includes artifact descriptions in multiple languages, including Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and English. Japanese versions will be coming soon.

Description

The Siku Quanshu: Wenyuange edition was compiled during the years 1773-1782 under an edict from Emperor Qianlong. It includes 3,460 classical works, such as the Quan Tang shi, Zi zhi tong jian, Xu Zi zhi tong jian chang bian, Wen xuan, Pei wen yun fu, Tai ping yu lan, the 25 Histories, with a total of more than 36,000 volumes, approximately 800 million Chinese characters.

It covers a wide range of subjects including the classics, history, literature, philosophy, geography, politics, governmental rules and regulations, economics, society, astronomy, science, technology, medicine, etc. It is the most comprehensive encyclopaedia of Chinese scholarship from antiquity to the 18th century.

The database provides special features including searches by title, author, caption title, special indices, subject divisions, name and dynasty of the author, It is useful not only for searching, but also for studying: linked dictionaries, notebooks.
