This page lists some of the major sets of data available to you. There are some helpful guides available from the UK Data Service. If what you want isn't listed here please check our subject guides or try the UK Data Service Catalogue or their associated resources links, as this is just a list of some of the most commonly used subscription sources.

Most of the data is only available to SOAS staff and students on or off-campus. 

Special Conditions for access:

For most resources you'll need your SOAS ID and password. If you are using resources provided by the UK Data Service for the first time you will need to complete an additional registration form; also some of the data sets require you to agree to further terms and conditions. 
Some resources require an additional username and password - this is indicated in the description.

Description

Currently, the database includes:

  1. Reading China:   564 eBooks collected from the best modern literature works.   
  2. Yearbook: 53 titles, 553 volumes in the yearbook database. Latest issues will be uploaded into the database when published. The subjects are chiefly statistical yearbooks. Please click guide to yearbooks ( 年鉴导航) for more information.
  3. Newspaper: 10 titles. In addition to inquiry and searching service using professional classifying system and indexing methods that are suitable to newspaper resource.  The database provides such service as browsing original -newspapers online and other value-added services. Latest issues will be uploaded into the database when published.

Reading China: Since 1950s to the turn of the century;
Yearbook: varies according to title - earliest 1970s and latest one year ago;
Newspaper: updated everyday

Bankscope contains detailed financial information for more than 29,000 banks worldwide, including accounts, ratios, ratings, ownership and news. You can use it to analyse data, compare banks, and download charts and graphs.

Bankscope is a global database of 30,000 banks' financial statements, ratings and intelligence. Information includes:

Access

Description

Census.ac.uk is the web portal for the ESRC Census Programme. The Programme makes available census data from the UK censuses conducted in 1971, 1981, 1991, 2001 and 2011.

Online access to the following databases for statistical data on China: Monthly Statistics, National Statistics, Provincial Statistics, City Statistics, County Statistics, Monthly Industrial Data, Yearly Industrial Data, Statistics on Maps, Statistical Yearbooks (Provincial, City and National). Compustat covers approximately 98% of the world’s market capitalization (ex US), including 90% of the Asian market, 90% of the Indian market, 95% of the European market. Fundamental data covering nearly 56 000 active and inactive companies from 112 countries. Annual, quarterly and semiannual company data history available back to 1987 (depending when that company was added to the database).

Description
Datastream is the largest and most renowned historical financial database with more than 255 million time series data. Information includes:

  • Equities – over 100,000 active equities (plus another 100,000 inactive) for 100 developed and emerging markets, and with over 200 fields
  • Company Fundamentals – fundamental data and financial ratios for all developed and many emerging markets, across 79 markets
  • Unit and Investment Trusts – unit trust coverage for 11 countries, including the top five European Funds Markets – complete coverage of UK Investment Trusts
  • Equity Indices –over 280,000 indices with extensive coverage of market indices for 68 countries; Equity index and constituent data for major index suppliers (such as MSCI, FTSE, S&P); Global Equity Indices span over 30 years of daily frequency covering 55 markets; also coverage of third party bond indices (such as JP Morgan, Citygroup, Barclays Capital)
  • Bonds – over 230,000 active bonds, 220,000 warrants, certificates and convertibles, and 500,000 fixed income securities
  • Macroeconomic Data – nationally sourced indicators for 118 markets and another 130 with comparable data from international sources (e.g. Eurostat, IMF, OECD)
  • Commodities – more than 77,000 live spot prices, including agricultural, energy and metal prices
  • Interest and Exchange Rates
  • Derivatives – excellent futures coverage across 34 countries, with history as back as 1976; options database covers 2,000 active contracts for over 490,000 live series

About

Access to the China Stock Market Series and the China Listed Firms Research Series available in English, and both traditional or simplified Chinese. GTA is a leading global provider of China financial market data, China industries and economic data. The Stock Market Data includes end-of-day prices, volume and computed comparable prices of all A shares and B shares companies listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange from 1990 to present. China Corporate Research Series provide detailed information on listed companies’ finance and behaviour. Data mainly derive from periodic and ad-hoc announcements from listed companies, including financial statements, financial ratios management information, shareholder information, corporate behaviour and analyst forecasts.
