Where is the Short-Loan Collection?

The Short-Loan Collection is located on Level E (Ground Floor) at stacks 58-61. They have a yellow band across the spine.

What is the Short-Loan Collection?

The purpose of the Short-Loan Collection is to make available to students titles that are in heavy demand as a result of being designated reading for their courses. It provides a back-up or ‘copy of last resort’, supplementing existing one-week loan and long-loan copies, and online resources.

Who has access?

The relocation of the collection now means it is available on open shelves, but borrowing is only available for SOAS staff or current SOAS students.

What can I borrow?
  • A maximum of 2 short loan books or 2 offprints can be borrowed at a time
  • Items borrowed any time Monday-Thursday are issued for 24 hours from the time of issue.
  • Items borrowed Friday-Saturday are due back by 10am on Monday
  • Some videos/DVDs are only for use in the library
  • All Short-Loan Collection items should be issued via the self-issue machine
  • Due dates and times clearly stated on the receipt printed via the self-issue machine. Always keep your receipt
  • If returned late Short-Loan Collection items are charged at 50p per hour, or any part thereof

  • Some videos/DVDs are only for use in the Library.
Can I renew or reserve short loan books and offprints?
  • Short loan books and offprints cannot be renewed or reserved, as they are in high demand.
Where can I find an item that has been recently returned?
  • Items marked 'recently returned' on the catalogue can be found in the re-shelving area
  • Returned materials are moved to the re-shelving area on the hour every hour
