From the eighteenth century through to the present day, the multiplicity of French-Arab experiences, positive or negative, constituted what may be called, borrowing Jacques Berque's phrase, 'the French-Arab thing' ('la chose franco-arabe').  In his lecture Laurens will try to define the history of this 'thing' and consequently its nature and its future.
