Razia Sultanova, dutar

A traditional piece from the Ferghana Valley, played on the Uzbek dutar, a long-necked plucked two–stringed lute. The dutar has twisted silk strings, and the piece is named after a special plucking technique on the instrument. The piece was in times gone by performed for entertainment and dance at women’s gatherings, either as a solo or by an ensemble of instruments.

Razia Sultanova received her PhD from Moscow State Conservatoire and is currently AHRC Research Fellow in the Creative and Performing Arts at SOAS. She is the founder of the ICTM Study Group on Music of the Turkic Speaking World. Her new book on Central Asian music is due to be published by I. B. Taurus.
