Toli is based on a repeated minor guitar riff in 3/4 and was written as part of Sara McGuinness’s MMus composition portfolio at SOAS. Sung in Lingala, the lingua franca of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the song tells young people to listen to the advice of their parents, since parents have wisdom. Sara completed her MMus (Performance) at SOAS in 2005 and entered the PhD programme in 2006.
