Track 13 Dobranotsh
Performed by the SOAS/Jewish Music Institute Klezmer Ensemble
This tune was used to serenade guests at traditional Eastern European Jewish weddings. It was taken from the collection of tunes and writings assembled in the 1930s by Soviet Jewish ethnomusicologist Moshe Beregovski, as published in the volume edited by Mark Slobin, Robert Rothstein and Michael Alpert, Jewish Instrumental Folk Music (Syracuse University Press, 2001). The recording features twelve current members and alumni of klezmer courses under the direction of klezmer violinist Ilana Cravitz. Ilana’s book on traditional klezmer style will be published by Oxford University Press in summer 2007.
Klezmer classes were added to the range of options available to music students at SOAS in 2001, the year after the JMI took up residence on campus, and two years after the first full-time lectureship in Jewish music moved from City University to SOAS.
