The focus of this shakuhachi course will be exploring and going deeper into the understanding and possibilities of koten honkyoku. In particular, we will look into different repertoires and the use of the music in meditation. We will also investigate the possibilities of creating something new with the idiom of honkyoku.

Adrian Freedman studied shakuhachi in Japan from 1990 to 1998 with Katsuya Yokoyama. He specialises in the koten honkyoku repertoire as taught by Yokoyama. He is also a composer incorporating the shakuhachi into new music with other non-western instruments such as kora, tabla and oud. He currently lives in Dartington, Devon. [artist website]
Kiku Day studied shakuhachi in Japan from 1989 to 2000 with Okuda Atsuya. Kiku specialises in koten honkyoku in Zensabo style and new music - both composed and improvised. She has a PhD in ethnomusicology from SOAS and is a founding member of the European Shakuhachi Society.
