About SOAS

15 September 2004
Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn visited the School for lunch with the Director and Principal, Professor Colin Bundy.

Her Royal Highness's connections with SOAS are wide and deep and she has provided much welcome patronage for the study and teaching of Thai music. When she visited the School in 1991 she graciously donated a set of Thai instruments and took the opportunity to visit classes and participate in seminars and opened conferences.

The following year she provided financial support to two successive teachers of Thai music at SOAS, both of whom also became SOAS students. The first of these, Dusadee Swanviboonpong, took his doctorate in the Department of Music (2000) and is now an AHRB Postdoctoral Fellow here. Both Dusadee and our current Thai music teacher, Paphutsorn Wongratanapitak, have been regular members of the Princess' personal ensemble, and both will be among the performers entertaining the Princess and her guests during the luncheon.
