Craven to accept ESIL prize in Heidelberg
2 September 2008
On September 6 in Heidelberg, Germany, Professor Matthew Craven, SOAS Professor of International Law and Dean of Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, will accept the 2008 European Society of International Law (ESIL) Prize for his book The Decolonization of International Law: State Succession and the Law of Treaties (Oxford University Press, 2007).
Professor Craven's book is an original analysis that links the continued difficulties surrounding the development of the legal doctrine of State succession with the political backdrop of decolonization. It examines recent cases such as the break-up of the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia and the unifications of Germany and Yemen and identifies continuing uncertainties in the law as being related to historic tensions that emerged during the period of decolonization.
The award, in line with the ESIL's goals of encouraging high-level scholarship and promoting a greater awareness and understanding of international law, is presented on a biennial basis for an outstanding published work in the field of international law.
Please visit Professor Craven's webpage for more information on his areas of specialty and publications.
