SOAS professor and students dig into research

Early in the month, Professor Elizabeth Moore and thirteen past and present Diploma, MA and PhD students attended the European Association of Southeast Asian Archaeologists Conference (EurASEAA12). Held in Leiden from September 1-5, the bi-annual conference brought together some of the newest research in the field.

Current Art & Archeology post-graduate research students Angela Chiu and Stephen Murphy presented papers – Lives of images in 15th century Thailand and Buddhist boundary markers of the 6-11th century AD in Northeast Thailand, respectively. Art & Archeology PhD-holders Alexandra Green, Vittorio Roveda, Peter Sharrock, and William A. Southworth also present papers – Perfect generosity and the standardization of Late 17th and 18th century Burmese wall paintings; Buddhist temples at Angkor; Angkor turns to Buddhism in 1182 CE; and The date of My Son A.1 and the chronology of temple architecture in the Champa culture, respectively. Elizabeth Moore presented a paper on Pagoda desecration and Myanmar archaeology: 1853-1886 CE. Many Masters graduates also attended the conference, and several presented. The publications of Elizabeth Moore, Vittorio Roveda, and Peter Sharrock were among the volumes on Southeast Asia available at the conference by River Books (Bangkok) owner Narisa Chakrabongse.
