Nigerian civil servants visit SOAS for specialist workshop

Civil servants from the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Transportation and the Nigerian Maritime Safety Administration attended a specialist workshop held at SOAS from the 13th to 24th of October. The workshop, entitled “Current Trends in Maritime Policy, Law and Practice Globally and in Nigeria” was organised by Dr Emilia Onyema of the SOAS School of Law and attracted speakers from both academia and the maritime industry. The speakers from industry included Mr Mark Brownrigg of the UK Chamber of Shipping, Mr Ken Gibbons of the Ports & Terminals Group London; from academia, Dr Michael Asteris of the University of Portsmouth, Prof. Peter Muchlinski and Dr Onyema both of SOAS, and Prof Adekunle of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies; and from practice Mr Ike Ehiribe, Mr Chidi Ilogu and Mr Ramdas Pillai. The workshop, aimed at the 20 visiting Nigerian civil servants, examined maritime issues such as port infrastructure development, inland waterways, shipping policies, foreign investment, arbitration and carriage conventions relevant to Nigeria, using cases in China, India, UK, Malaysia and Singapore for comparative analysis.

Participating in the workshop are delegates, Chinese judges on another SOAS program, and SOAS lecturers Prof Michael Palmer, Dr Martin Lau, Prof Philip Jaggar and Dr Emilia Onyema.
