SOAS to move forward on new building plans
10 February 2009
In Autumn 2007, the School submitted a bid for land at 20 Russell Square, with a view to enhance the Russell Square facilities, and in particular to incorporate a new “wrap around” building. Finally, after many twists and turns, and discussions and negotiations with various parties, the Board of Trustees of the University of London has agreed to grant SOAS a 99-year lease on this land.
The University of London decision has been made on the understanding that SOAS will brief its architects so as to ensure that the basement area of a new building will have direct and secure access to the IALS building on the corner of Russell Square and Bedford Way. This decision comes as welcome news as it will enable the School to move forward with its plans for Russell Square and the "wrap-around" building.
Please visit the full plans for details, outlined in the Estates Strategy approved by Governing Body in December 2007, and in the SOAS Centenary Masterplan, commissioned from John McAslan and Partners in April 2007.
