Language Space Opening
The Director of SOAS Paul Webley and the Provost and President of UCL Malcolm Grant formally opened the new Language Space.
23 January 2007
The Language Space is an innovative classroom that provides teachers with easy access to the following:
- A wealth of authentic text including radio, online newspapers and support material including online dictionaries and grammar reference.
- A way of presenting and engaging students in text through the use of an interactive whiteboard.
- The technology for students to film themselves making presentations in the target language.
- The technology for students to record themselves speaking the target language.
Every workstation has a PC and headset; and the Space contains audio-visual facilities and an interactive whiteboard. The software available includes: audacity (for digital sound-recording and editing), hot potatoes (for creating different types of language exercises), irfanview (image-editing for beginners), itunes (for playing and converting sound files) and MALTED (an environment for creating digital language courses). Windows terminal server (wts) is installed on all workstations which gives access to hundreds of other programmes.
