23 July 2009
A team of academics from SOAS have been presented with an international award.
Professor Johan Pottier, Dr Harry West, and Dr Jakob Klein, all from the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, have received the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society (AFHVS) 2009 Excellence in Instruction Award, in recognition of their outstanding teaching in the anthropology of food.
The team’s nomination by the School’s Director and Principal Paul Webley, was supported by numerous letters from students and colleagues. Students praised the team as “inspiring lecturers” that had made their time at SOAS enjoyable and interesting.
Dr Harry West said: “This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved with the SOAS Food Studies Centre. Recognition from AFHVS is a real honour. We hope that it will attract more great students with an interest in food and agriculture to study at SOAS.”
The AFHVS was formed in 1987 to promote the study of issues associated with the production, consumption, and distribution of food, fibre, and natural resources. The Society organises an annual professional meeting in conjunction with the Association for the Study of Food and Society.
