2009 National Student Survey

The 2009 National Student Survey (NSS) results have been published. The data is available on the HEFCE website (http://www.hefce.ac.uk/learning/nss/data/2009/) and further analysis will be made available on 29 September at www.unistats.com/ and on the School’s website at http://www.soas.ac.uk/students/feedback/nss/.
Overall, total satisfaction of final year undergraduate students is 86%, up 1% on 2008. Participation also increased from 60% to 70%. Students found staff good at explaining things, scoring 90%, enthusiastic about what they teach, 89%, and the course intellectually stimulating, 87%.
At subject level, the School has done well in Politics with a 96% satisfaction score, History at 92%, Law at 90% and Linguistics and Religious studies both at 89%.
There have also been improvements in areas identified in last year’s survey as requiring attention namely - Assessment and Feedback at 65% compared to 63% in 2008, Academic Support at 64%, up from 59%, Personal Development at 75% up from 67% and Learning Resources up 4% on last years result at 73%.
However, there are some areas the School still needs to improve on and a further analysis of the results will be discussed at the relevant School and Faculty committees in the coming session.
