Good Governance in Africa: Scholars and Leaders Share Lessons in Uganda

Mo Ibrahim

19 April 2010

Policy makers, academics, civil society representatives and government officials from across Africa are meeting in Uganda from Monday, 19 April, through Friday, 23 April, to explore the future of governance and development on the continent.

Called the Residential School in Uganda, the event is being led by the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS) in partnership with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and the Human Rights and Peace Centre (HURIPEC) at Makerere University.

“The SOAS Residential School in Uganda promises to be an engaging and informative event," said Dr Mo Ibrahim, whose foundation works to encourage leadership in Africa. "Participants from across the region will gather to discuss governance challenges in relation to their work. After a successful inaugural school in Dakar last year, we look forward to a similarly productive discussion in Uganda.”

The residential school also sees the launch of ‘Governance in Africa Conversations’, a series of radio interviews with leading academics discussing a variety of issues concerning governance and development. The programmes are being broadcast on radio stations across the continent and will also be available online at www.governanceinafrica.org

The Residential Schools in Africa programme is part of a larger partnership between SOAS, in particular its Centre of African Studies, and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. The partnership aims to build skills, develop talent and enable Africans to improve the quality of governance in their countries.
